Procedural vs. conceptual understanding
Have you ever asked your child "why"? Why did you solve that problem in that way? There's a difference between simply knowing the steps to solve a problem and understanding the underlying concepts. When your child is able to understand the underlying concepts they've developed a deeper level of understanding and will ultimately be able to apply those skills and strategies to a diverse set of problems and situations, rather than simply memorizing a sequence of steps that they may later forget!
